A short history of a 30 year career…

I began working on digital projects the day after I left my fashion illustration course at university.

By my late teens, I was hand-coding websites (we didn’t have content management systems in those days) and as an early adopter of Photoshop for my illustration work, I was well equipped for the move into Web Design full-time.

Early years were spent cutting my teeth at Football365, Music365 and then moving on to head up the digital design team for Umbro.

As a designer with a technical background I soon found myself moving into Information Architecture (IA) work and after a year or so I was the IA responsible for the architecture of the BBC Homepage; this still ranks as one of my career highlights, not least because this was the first user-research led project I had managed and where my fascination and study of true, online personalisation began.

From here, my Information Architecture developed and I became responsible for the entire Sony PlayStation Europe portal (covering 22 territories and 11 languages).

After a decade of working within start-ups; where I am proud to have produced the first draft architecture and wireframes for the successful launch of SongKick, as well as attempting to finance and launch my own venture, I returned to publishing with Future and Bauer before settling down to help with the huge digital transformation beginning at BT.

Most recently I’ve been leading the digital transformation and design system creation for Elekta - the world’s leading innovator of precision radiation therapy solutions (through both hardware and software).

Does this sound like the kind of person and experience you would like to lead your team?

My Approach

Everything is adaptive...

Jeff Veen likes to say that, ‘There is no perfect process because there is no perfect team’.

Having spent time working with teams and people from all disciplines and across over twenty years of process and framework development, I am in full agreement with his statement.

Every new team - and new project/product development - is different. And any approach to the successful management of it will need to be adapted to suit.

There needs to be an understanding of the people on your team, because that knowledge is what helps develop the culture and your communication, and it’s this culture that breeds the momentum and the excitement of developing a promising product together.

Add in an extensive research-based methodology (using both evidential and exploratory investigation), the active mentoring and nurturing of individuals’ design and structural competencies and the development /maintenance of healthy, transparent stakeholder relationships and the rest of the process is a doddle (relatively speaking!).

More About Me…

  • I live in South London with my fiancée Tolu and am the proud dad of two daughters in their 20s and a recently-turned-teenage stepson.

Outside of my design and management of work, I possess a healthy addiction to discovering new HipHop and R&B music, I’ve built custom motorcycles for Yamaha, I recently renovated an old 1977 Alfa Romeo Giulia Super, and I’m still trying to calm down from Crystal Palace’s FA Cup win.

  • I also have a propensity to inhale way too many movies and TV shows in a single sitting.

Which is good, because I am also a screenwriter for TV, for which I became the winner of the Studio21 Drama writers award for 2024 and was recently selected to be a member of BBC Voices for 2025.
